The inpatient ward, day-hospitalization ward and outpatient clinic have been modernized to European standards. Equipment including a Vidix 4.0 videodermatoscope, Heine 20 dermatoscopes, a Q-Switched & Long Pulsed Nd:YAG 532/1064 nm laser, a Philips Affiniti ultrasound system, phototherapy cabins (Waldmann 7001 K, dr. Hönle dermalight 3000, dermalight 500, UVA, UVB-NB), electrocautery units (ZEUS VISION, EMED ES120, GIMA diatermo MB160D, Kentamed RF-B 4 MHz), an EROND CRYO cryotherapy unit, a DynaLux 700 photodynamic therapy device and a VivaScope 1500 in-vivo confocal microscope supports both high-performance professional work and the training of young residents to international standards. The clinic is a national reference centre for the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune bullous diseases. These professional achievements were made possible by the teams of dermato-venereologists who have worked, and still work, in this clinic.
About the ADT
The Transylvanian Dermatologists Association (ADT) was founded in 1995 by Professor Dr. Nicolae Maier, head of the Cluj-Napoca Department of Dermatology.
Thirty years of community
The first ADT Conference took place on 16 September 1996 in Baia Mare, organized by Prof. Dr. Nicolae Maier and Dr. Valentin Pop. The founding members of 1996, in alphabetical order: Baican Adrian, Câmpean Florina, Cicală Angela, Ciuce Dorina, Cosgarea Rodica, Crișan Corina, Crișan Maria, Găvan Norina, Geleriu Liviu, Haș Cristina, Hindli Raluca, Lăluț Ioana, Maier Nicolae, Pană Mariana, Petrișor Carmen, Pop Daniela, Popa Ruxandra, Pop Valentin, Orăsan Remus, Semenescu Ioana, Tătaru Alexandru, Todea Oana and Vinereanu Radu.
Since the ADT grew mainly out of the prestigious Department of Dermato-Venereology in Cluj-Napoca, knowing the history of Cluj dermatology — an essential pillar of dermato-venereology in Transylvania — is part of the association’s identity.
The Cluj school of dermatology
The Department of Dermatology opened its doors in 1874, within the Faculty of Medicine of the Franz Joseph University.
Géber Károly
The clinic’s first professor, with a doctorate in medicine from Vienna and outstanding work in histopathology: his theses on the histopathogenesis of lupus erythematosus, the histology of molluscum contagiosum, the Aleppo ulcer and xeroderma pigmentosum stood the test of time.
Marschalkó Tamás
Trained in the teams of Moritz Kaposi and Max Neisser, he reorganized the clinic and equipped it with Röntgen and Finsen devices, a Zeiss ultramicroscope and a Reichert microscope. He made dermatology a mandatory discipline for medical students and served as dean in 1913–1914, internationally recognized for his work on syphilis, gonorrhoea and the description of plasma cells.

Led the clinic through the years of the First World War.
Ștefan Gh. Nicolau
Laid the foundations for practising dermatology in the Romanian language. Nicolau livedoid dermatitis is presented as a distinctive post-medication reaction in dermatology textbooks worldwide.
Coriolan Tătaru
With training in Vienna, Paris and London, he contributed alongside Iuliu Hațieganu to establishing the Faculty of Medicine. Dean in 1930–1931, he founded and led the journal Clujul Medical (1928–1940) and created the museum of moulages and photographs — about 200 pieces, awarded the gold medal at the 1935 International Congress of Dermatology in Budapest.
Alexandru Opriș · Petre Țîrlea
Professor Alexandru Opriș led the clinic for less than two years, followed by Professor Petre Țîrlea, who later headed the Dermato-Venereology Clinic in Timișoara and served as dean of the Timișoara Faculty of Medicine.
Iuliu Căpușan
A personality with vast specialist knowledge; in recognition of his professional standing, he was elected dean and vice-rector of the Cluj-Napoca Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy.
Nicolae Maier
Rector of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy from 1990 to 1992 and founder of the Transylvanian Dermatologists Association — the project closest to his heart. Author of a reference treatise on skin pathology, he is remembered as an empathetic, warm, jovial and fair personality — always with a smile.
Rodica Cosgarea
The clinic was led by Professor Rodica Cosgarea, a period marked by the development of skin surgery, dermoscopy and dermato-oncology. Professor Alexandru Tătaru also played a defining role in the clinic’s standing and in training the next generation of dermatologists.
Adrian Baican
Since 2019, the clinic has been led by Professor Adrian Baican.
